With the burst of new smart home technology being available and the rise of the ‘new economy’, it’s no surprise that a few industries are bound to be disrupted. Some traditional companies will either resist change, or move in the direction of the future. For traditional alarm company ADT, it seems they’re heading towards a more ‘modern’ approach with their launch of the new SmartThings powered home security system.
And it seems with the release of this new product, the concept is completely different from your traditional alarm system.
They’re now offering optional security monitoring services.
The option for monitoring isn’t brand new – other companies like Abode or Wink already have similar DIY kits like this on the market. The optional monitoring seems like an attempt to be a part of the crowd though, considering they’re a traditional alarm company whose services depended largely on professional monitoring. It’s concerning for a company like ADT to make this an option, considering self-monitoring could lead to an array of dangers. The home security starter kit is a combination of smart home products that are disguised as ‘home security.’
The bare basics of a security kit.
The kit comes with a Security Hub, two door and window detectors, and a motion detector. The starter package will cost you about $549.99. It’s a hefty price tag upfront, but you’ll avoid signing a contract and subscription costs. You’ll have to sacrifice being fully protected, considering monthly monitoring ranges from $14.99 for life safety and $24.99 for security services. You can sign up for monitoring via the mobile app without any contracts. You’ll have the options of adding on other sensors like fire, carbon monoxide and flood though.
The security kit will work as a SmartThings Hub.
The 7-inch touchscreen control panel includes a built-in siren, battery and cellular data back-up. It can also connect with compatible SmartThings devices, so that the touchscreen or your app can be the center of control for your smart home system. You can use it to control other smart home devices like door locks, doorbells, thermostats and lightbulbs.
The verdict?
If you’re looking into home security, the best option is always to go with professional monitoring. It’s a risk to self-monitor, especially the fact anything can happen while you’re sleeping or when you’re away from home. If you’re going to purchase the ADT SmartThings Security Kit, don’t go without paying for the monthly monitoring. You can activate these services directly on the app and deactivate when you want. It will be available for purchase online and at Best Buy this October 29, but you can still preorder it until then.
