The Nest Learning Thermostat has quickly become one of the most popular tools in the smart home world. The brand boasts both temperature control and recently entered the smart camera race. But these devices can not check the health of the air in your home. If that’s a solution you’re looking for, look no further than the Elgato Eve Room.
Elgato, which translates to “the cat” in Spanish, has released the Eve Room, one of the first smart-home products that can integrate with Apple’s HomeKit. Since Apple HomeKit features the popular voice-control technology, Siri, many joke that this Elgato air device brings Siri its smell.
How Does Eve Room Work?
Unlike counterparts in Nest and other smart thermostats, Eve Room does not only measure the temperature in a home. The device also measures humidity and volatile organic compounds (VOC). This means that Eve Room tracks the health of the air in your home, and it sends this data to a Bluetooth device.
This is a useful tool for anyone who suffers from allergy, is amidst home construction, or simply wants to make sure there are no particles in their home’s air that can cause them damage.
Price and Style
Elgato Eve Room clocks in at $80. The device is a sleek, white square box. It measures roughly three inches by three inches and takes three AA batteries. Eve Room is best placed on a solid surface, which is rather limiting.
A Few Problems with Elgato Eve Room
There’s some problems with the Elgato Eve Room. The device works very well and accurately tracks all data in the home. The only problem with air monitoring is that the device takes some time to calculate air quality and location placement is limited, but otherwise it gets the job done.
The real problem with Eve Room is its lack of communication. This is a rather interesting thing to note since it integrates with Apple’s HomeKit and it’s touted as a smart device. But to the contrary, users do not receive alert notifications and Eve Room can only be activated on Bluetooth devices.
Eve Room will not serve as an emergency alert device and it will not automate the home based on environment.
Eve Room updates can only be seen while standing next to the device with the app open. Users will have to be within Bluetooth range and can not access app information remotely, unless you have an AppleTV. Only then will remote viewing work.
If you aren’t within the range of Eve Room, the device will store data for two weeks, then it will update data once you come back into range.
It Does Get the Job Done
Though the Elgato Eve Room has some limitations, it does get the job done. Users just need to know beforehand that the device does not make their life more automated, so it may not fully qualify as a smart tool.
But users who are looking for temperature readings with the added bonus of seeing air quality will be pleased with Eve Room. This is especially beneficial for users constructing a new home or who can’t seem to kick allergies. If you have small kids in the home and want to monitor their air quality, you will be pleased.
It’s price-point is reasonable, and since Eve Room is compatible with HomeKit, it’s likely that the device will get smarter in the future and become more of a home automated tool.
